Yellow Zimmermann dress

Recently I've been so busy working on starting my design studio CocoMingo studios with a friend of mine (which I will talk about more in another post). I wanted to post about one of my favourite dresses that I don't get to wear often.

When it comes to bright dresses, I usually have to incorporate black into them somehow to make it feel more comfortable. I love colour but I also really love wearing black, so my outfits usually have to consist of some black even if it were only the shoes.

I also really like mixing an edgy style with a feminine garment, so in this case I chose to pair up my yellow Zimmermann dress with a leather jacket I found at Topshop in Dubai a few years back. The mix of different materials and textures really makes an outfit stand out and feel more personal.

H&M Launch in Australia

H&M finally launches in Australia and Melbourne throws a big celeb-filled party at one of the most iconic buildings in Melbourne, the home of the new H&M store.

The launch at the GPO last night was an event to remember with celebrities such as Chris Lilley, Michael and Lindy Klim, Nikki Philips, Zac and Jordan Stenmank, Drew and Tully from Big Brother, Hugh Sheridan and others attended, while the Californian sister trio HAIM rocked the stage with their DJ-ing skills. Attendees also included fashion bloggers such as Elle and Tash from Theyallhateus, Micah and Jesse from Controlcreative, Jess and Stef from Howtwolive, Connie from Kisforkani, Phoebe from Ladymelbourne, Jess from Whatwouldkarldo and many many more.

On top of the flowing cocktails, champagne and canapes, guests were given a treat of 20% off on all purchases; so naturally I ended up buying a few too many pieces including the hat you see in one of the photos below.

H&M officially opens its doors to the public on Saturday 5th of April at 10am.

Interview: Fashion designer Kara Liu

I had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Kara Liu a few months back and had a preview of her creations that reflect her love for detail and the philosophy that ‘less is more’, which also happens to be my favourite design philosophy whether it's designing interiors of spaces or jewellery. I admire the perfection in her minimal colour palette, perfectly constructed forms and beautiful lines that she has achieved in her designs at such a young age. Read on to learn more about her and what she has in store for us in the next few months.

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself

I was born in Shanghai and raised in Melbourne. I don't particularly see myself as being super creative, I'm just very good at organising my thoughts into the visual design.
I treat the creative process like 'controlled experiments'.
Some of my likes and dislikes...
I like clean things and big spaces.
I like lines more than patterns.
I like 'less' more than 'more'
I like squares more than circles.
I like textures more than motifs.

2. Describe your background in fashion before you started your label.

I was trained as a fashion designer at RMIT's Bachelor of Design (Fashion), graduated with honours as the top of my class in 2012.
During uni I interned with Australian designers LIFEwithBIRD and Lui Hon. I also took part in MSFW 2012 and LMFF in both 2012 and 2013.
Then I proceeded to intern with Alexander Wang in New York. I worked the Womens RTW Department on the Fall Winter 13 Collection and the Resort 14 Collection.
Won a few awards here and there, including Glue Store Australia's One Percent Design Competition, which lead to a collaboration collection that will launch in Glue Stores nation wide in April.

3. Where do you get your inspiration from?

Details. Not details of anything in particular really, it can be something as interesting as the leg of a great pieces of Danish furniture, or something as mundane as the handle of a water kettle. I like to document these things in my daily life and sketch or drape from them.
And textures. A lot of times a designs starts from an interesting fabrics. I always spend sometime in fabric markets overseas trying to source unique fabrics and trims.

4. What is the style you try to portray with your garments?

Minimal perfection would be a good way to put it. A very quite, refined, distilled aesthetics. Function is also very important. I don't add embellishments of the sake of it, it has the serve a purpose, either aesthetically or functionally.

5. What is the most important lesson you've learned since starting your label?

Know your audience and design what you believe in and they believe in.
And also learning how to step away from your work and look at the designs from afar, it helped me to see a lot of things that would have missed.

6. How do you see your label in 10 years time?

I don't have a plan by design. I'd like to see where it takes itself. For example I did a footwear collaboration with Belmore Bootmakers last year, which will launch in March. I have never thought that I will design shoes this soon but the opportunity presented itself so why not. The products are amazing!

7. What advice would you give to aspiring fashion designers?

Make sure this is really what to want to do. Because it is not an easy profession. But if this is truly what you love, then work hard, and have fun.

Kara is a very passionate and refined designer with a very impressive resume and line of work. We can't wait to see what her very own label has in store for us in the near future. You can check out Kara's work on her website and through her facebook page

How to wear black on black

There's a reason black is so popular when it comes to clothing. You really can't go wrong with black whether it's pairing black with another colour or wearing black on its own. I often do that, where instead of a little black dress I create my own all-black outfit. In this case it's with a black skirt and one of my favourite black tops right now. Also 99% of the time I wear it with red lipstick to give it a bit of a classic touch.

There are a few ways you can wear an all-black outfit without looking like you're off to a funeral. you can choose to pair different textures or materials together. Or you could add a pop of colour through your shoes and/or bag or jewellery.

What's your take on black on black?

Yellow peplum

I know I'm a little late to wish you all a merry christmas and happy new year but I truly hope you had a great holiday and that 2014 has started on a good note. I am so grateful for all of my experiences throughout the year, as you might have seen some of the highlights on instagram including: traveling (Singapore, UK, France, Italy, Armenia, Dubai) meeting great people through the 7AL blog, being part of an interdisciplinary industry project through uni, and finishing up my masters degree. I have been, however, neglecting my blog quite a lot lately but I feel like I needed some time off after I finished my degree to do nothing for a change and updating a blog, as much fun as it is, takes a lot of effort and time. Spending the last 2 weeks with my family and friends here in Dubai has been just what I needed to rejuvenate after a very stressful and exhausting year.

I really appreciate those who still keep checking my instagram and facebook page though and I will start back posting on the blog twice a week (Mondays and Wednesdays at 6 am Melbourne timing).

In this outfit post I'm wearing a yellow peplum top I found in a boutique on Chapel Street that was sadly closing down. Although I'm sort of over the peplum trend I quite liked the elegant shoulder details this top had along with the mustard yellow colour which I've been obsessed with lately. I chose to play on the elegant vibe of the top and wear it with a plain black pencil skirt and my Guess black sandals I bought in galleries lafayette when I was in Paris a few months back. And the last detail to complete the outfit would have to be the red lipstick that looks great with anything yellow.

Blow drying basics with GHD

The one thing that hair straighteners can't achieve that well is volume. When you want your hair to be full and bouncy it's time to get the hairdryer and hairbrush out. I've created a picture guide of the basics of blow drying using my new GHD air. I've never really thought much about hair dryers but I'm seriously loving this particular one. It's quieter, stronger and so much quicker to get through my thick hair that usually takes at least an hour to dry with my old hairdryer.

1. Pat your hair dry with a towel and apply a heat protection spray.

2. Comb your hair to get rid of any tangled parts.

3. Quick dry your hair so that it's roughly half dry.

4. Tie back your hair and only leave out the front (fringe). Now wrap the section of your hair around the brush and move the hairdryer on top in a downwards position. Do this slowly to ensure the hair dries and repeat the same section at least twice. Always remember to face the tip of the hairdryer downwards to avoid getting fizzy flyaways.

5. 6. Start going through your whole hair in sections from the bottom until you reach back to your fringe. You may want to wrap the hair around the brush outwards or inwards depending on how you want your hair styled. I prefer to go inwards the first time and then outwards the second time.

7. Once you've made your way through all your hair, flip your hair upside down and go through them with your fingers to make sure it's tangle free.

8. 9. Now flip back, neaten it up and enjoy!
